THE HISTORY OF THE ISSUE
The issue of abortion is not new. Interestingly, abortion was legal in the United States when the first settlers came and continued to be legal (and was even openly advertised) until the late 1800s when certain states began to make it illegal because they worried that the immigrant population was going to grow larger than the white, American population. This was a racist and oppressive motivation to ban abortion, but it continued to be illegal until the 1973 court case called Roe v. Wade, which made it legal again. During the years that abortion was outlawed, the number of abortions did not decrease, they simply became more dangerous and caused many deaths and injuries.
WHY LEGAL ABORTION IS NEEDED
Abortion is important because women deserve the right to decide whether or not they have to go through the difficult process of having a baby and whether they want to change their entire lives to take care of a child. Many women also need to be able to seek abortions after being raped, for in these cases they had no choice. Women are just as human as men and deserve to control their bodies as such.
With Donald Trump as president, the rights and safety of women are in danger. Trump wants to take away the rights to abortion provided by Roe v. Wade. Many people are fighting to keep abortion legal, but soon Trump will be electing a new judge to the Supreme Court and his choice is Brett Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh is a conservative judge who has made it clear that, if elected, one of his first actions will be to make abortion illegal. During Kavanaugh’s hearings over the last few days people have been speaking out against him, even though many have been arrested for it.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
In order to protect the right to abortion we must call our representatives and urge them not to support actions that will make birth control inaccessible. If you want to follow a script for these calls, the app Five Calls helps you along the way. Calling makes a big difference and does not take long at all. We can also help by donating to organizations such as Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Federation.
